  • Work experience: Building skills in Early Years education

Real learning doesn’t always happen at a desk. For one of our students, Fridays mean stepping into a local nursery and gaining first-hand experience of Early Years education.

Every week from 12:30 to 3:00pm, they take part in a childcare placement that brings their studies to life and helps them understand early childhood development in a real-world setting.

During each visit, our student supports children through play-based learning, encouraging them to explore a wide range of activities including art, music, literacy, numeracy and early physical education. By assisting with these sessions, the student is learning how to plan age-appropriate activities that are both engaging and meaningful for young children.

Working in a nursery also gives our student insight into the everyday realities of early years care. From maintaining routines and following health and safety standards to creating a nurturing and stimulating environment, these experiences are helping them build essential professional skills. Along the way, they are developing patience, creativity, communication and resilience, as well as learning how to stay calm under pressure and adapt to the emotional and physical demands of the role.

By returning to the nursery each week, the student continues to grow in confidence, strengthen their understanding of child development and apply their learning in real time. This work experience has not only supported their studies but has also equipped them with the practical skills and insight needed for a successful future career in childcare.
