At the heart of our school, the English Department, led by Daisy, Camilla, Amanda, and Mel, is passionate about bringing the power of language and literature to life.
From lively discussions on Shakespeare to creative storytelling, our mission is to help every student find their voice, build confidence, and enjoy the journey through words.
We’re proud to offer three tailored streams in English at KS4, ensuring that every student receives a learning experience suited to their academic ability and previous schooling. These pathways lead to qualifications in English Language, English Literature, and/or Functional Skills. Whether students are analysing poetry, exploring drama, or crafting their own narratives, our curriculum is designed to nurture individual strengths and support personal growth.
At KS3, our focus is on engagement and enjoyment. We believe that learning English should be as creative as it is challenging! Lessons often include lively discussions, collaborative activities, and English-based games that build both skills and enthusiasm. As students progress to KS4, they deepen their understanding of literature, refine their writing, and prepare for success in their chosen qualifications.
In the English Department, we embrace both innovation and tradition. Our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and students frequently use their iPads for independent research, interactive tasks, and creative projects such as designing their own book covers. Yet, we never underestimate the value of pen and paper – handwriting and written expression remain essential skills that we proudly champion.
Our students consistently achieve strong results in both GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications, a testament to their hard work and our team’s dedication. And we’re always looking to enrich learning beyond the classroom. If the stars align (to borrow from Shakespeare!), we hope to take our KS4 English Literature students to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank, an unforgettable opportunity to experience the Bard’s work in its most authentic setting.
Between us, the English team brings a wealth of experience from mainstream, SEN, and international educational settings. This diversity allows us to connect with learners from all backgrounds and provide an inclusive, supportive environment for every student to thrive.
Whether it’s diving into a classic play, exploring contemporary non-fiction, or crafting a powerful piece of creative writing, students in our English Department are encouraged to think critically, express themselves confidently, and, above all, enjoy the magic of language.
The English Department: where every story matters – especially yours.
