Director, Head of In Toto London, DSL (London) and Executive Head of In Toto Cambridge

Emily Gunton is Director, Head of In Toto London and Executive Head of In Toto Cambridge. With an illustrious background in music, she studied at the Royal College of Music and holds an impressive array of qualifications, including BMus (Hons), Dip ABRSM, QTS, and NPQH.  She is currently studying for her NPQ (SENCO).

Emily's career began as a highly sought-after freelance percussionist, performing with world-class orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. She also led transformative workshops for renowned institutions: Wigmore Hall, Britten Sinfonia, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. These experiences ignited her passion for teaching and paved the way for her distinguished leadership roles, including Director of Music, Head of Co-Curricular & Outreach, and School Consultant Teacher at a prestigious independent girls' school, where she made a lasting impact over a decade.

A vocal advocate for gender equality in music education, Emily is a prolific writer, contributing thought-provoking articles to Music Teacher Magazine, The Guardian, and the Times Educational Supplement, where she is a regular columnist. Her expertise extends beyond writing—she has composed a selection of pieces for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music’s groundbreaking new Drum Kit syllabus and is a highly regarded keynote speaker, specialising in music education, gender equity, and special educational needs.

Emily’s true passion lies in empowering young people to discover their unique talents and carve out meaningful futures. She thrives in alternative provision, where she helps students re-engage with learning, guiding them toward further and higher education, employment, or apprenticeships. As a visionary leader, Emily has played a pivotal role in developing the In Toto Ed curriculum, shaping the educational experience across all three schools and ensuring that every student receives the support they need to flourish.
