Esports Department visits the Power Up! exhibition at the Science Museum

On Thursday 11 December 2025, the Esports department embarked on its first ever educational trip, heading to the Science Museum in London to explore the acclaimed Power Up! exhibition. The visit provided students with an exciting blend of gaming history, hands-on learning, and cross-curricular enrichment.

Immersed in gaming history

The Power Up! exhibition features an extensive collection of retro and modern games consoles, arcade machines, and gaming PCs. Upon arrival, the whole group joined together for a lively multiplayer game of Halo 3, setting the tone for a day filled with friendly competition and teamwork.

Afterwards, students dispersed across the exhibition with staff, exploring the vast array of consoles on display. From early classics like Pong and Sonic the Hedgehog, through to modern favourites such as Mario Kart Tour and Portal 2, pupils were able to enjoy these titles on their original hardware. The authenticity of the experience gave students a unique opportunity to appreciate how gaming has evolved across the decades.

One of the day’s challenges was to play as many different games as possible – an activity that many embraced with enthusiasm. One particularly determined student even made it their mission to try every console in sight!

Learning beyond the controller

The group also visited several of the museum’s other galleries, including the Space, Mathematics, and Technology exhibitions. These additional stops provided valuable cross-curricular connections, sparking discussions about the role of maths, physics, and technological innovation within the world of gaming and beyond.

A memorable experience

Students described the trip as an exciting and inspiring experience. Many were thrilled to have hands-on access to rare and iconic gaming systems, relishing the chance to “live the history” of the video game world.

The day not only enriched their understanding of Esports but also broadened their appreciation of STEM subjects, linking their passion for gaming with real-world concepts and historical developments.

The Esports department looks forward to building on the success of this inaugural trip with more enriching opportunities in the future.
