  • Science update - February 2026

This half-term has seen our students delving into the fascinating and vital world of medicine, focusing on key topics such as antibiotics, painkillers, and the pressing issue of antibiotic resistance.

    Exploring the world of medicine

Through a comprehensive case study and research task, students have been encouraged to utilise their iPads to explore a medicine or drug of their choice. This hands-on approach not only enhances their scientific enquiry skills, but also fosters critical thinking, as they assess the reliability and veracity of their sources. By integrating cross-curricular English skills, students are learning to articulate their findings effectively, which is essential for their academic growth.

The importance of understanding antibiotic resistance

The exploration of antibiotic resistance is a particularly relevant topic, resonating with current health issues that affect us all. As students investigate the implications of antibiotic misuse and the development of new drugs, they are becoming informed citizens equipped to engage in discussions about health and medicine. This aligns with our commitment to preparing students for the challenges they will face in the future, particularly in healthcare and scientific fields.

Developing research skills for future success

Our students’ research tasks are not just about gathering information; they are about developing essential skills that will serve them well in their future academic pursuits. By learning to navigate digital resources and evaluate the credibility of their sources, students are honing their digital literacy skills, which are crucial in today’s information-rich environment. This project exemplifies the broader educational priorities within the national curriculum, emphasising the importance of scientific understanding and its applications.
