For many students, the word maths can feel intimidating – often bringing to mind complex terms like trigonometry, calculus, or quadratic equations, or even triggering memories of past struggles. At In Toto Ed Peterborough, we work hard to change that perception by making maths accessible, engaging, and relevant.
Our approach is rooted in practical application and creative strategies tailored to individual needs. From using Smarties to teach ratios, to collecting data for tally charts and creating bar graphs, we make lessons interactive and relatable. We also encourage peer teaching, where students who grasp a concept support others, and incorporate kinaesthetic learning – such as using movement to understand bearings and angles.
Maths anxiety can affect learners of all abilities, so we focus on building mathematical resilience. We celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities, use growth mindset language like “You can’t do this yet”, and break complex problems into manageable steps with worked examples. Regular assessments, including BKSB diagnostics and quick five-minute checks, help us identify gaps and provide targeted interventions through catch-up sessions and online platforms like Corbett Maths, First Class Maths, and MyMaths.

Problem-solving is at the heart of our teaching. We guide students through key questions:
Maths is everywhere; in the way we live, work, and understand the world. By developing strong foundations and real-world connections, we empower our students to approach maths with confidence and curiosity.
