End of term attendance update

This term has seen some outstanding attendance with more than half our students across the whole school maintaining 100%.

This is a fantastic achievement that reflects our commitment to supporting every student.

Each of our students has an individual attendance overview, where we can ensure there is support for all, with home visits to students to help them reintegrate, when they have been struggling for whatever reason. To give new students the chance to visit, and gradually settle in while they get used to their surroundings.

Rewards System:

  • When a student has 100% attendance for the week, they receive 3 points for their house
  • If there is improved attendance, they also receive points for their house
  • Points can also be gained for engagement in class and outstanding contribution to the school community and beyond, such as forest school and external trips

To help the students want to come into school, we have created a welcoming environment. We've embedded several strategies to help students settle in and feel part of our community:

  • A hot chocolate, cup of tea, or similar, on arrival, or even some toast if they have missed breakfast, helping them set themselves up for the day
  • If there’s too much going on, a quiet space where they can regulate themselves before starting the day
  • Each student is greeted by name and asked how they are doing
  • Staff are ready for the students and greet them on arrival to their lesson
  • Staff check in on lessons, supporting where they can and picking up students if things are not quite working out for them on the day

Student Voice is also growing and taking shape, where every student is able to be part of having a voice.

To help the school grow, and for students to feel a part of the school we have our student voice, integrated into their PSHE lessons where once a term they have the opportunity to talk and discuss what is going well and what they think could help to improve the environment they are in.

What students told us they want:

  • More trips, such as the cinema, bowling, London Museums,
  • Develop the outdoor space, to make it look more appealing, such as new football posts, planters painted and produce grown to use in cooking lessons.
  • More of their work displayed around the school, as they are proud of their achievements

What students value most:

The positives they drew on were the staff here being approachable, helpful and supportive, being able to get things wrong without fear of being shouted at, and to be guided and able to discuss why / how at a more appropriate level rather than being spoken at. Having a number of staff where they feel they can talk openly without judgement.

Cooking is one of their favourite subjects and the new unit has also gone down well with the students, enabling them to create more and home in on developing their skills.
