Welcome to our May half term English update.

As we enter the final term, we are focusing on exam preparation for our senior students, enhancing writing precision in KS3, and celebrating the completion of our Functional Skills courses.

Here is an update from each key area:

    Key Stage 3: Mastering non-fiction

This term, KS3 students are diving deep into the art of non-fiction writing. We are moving beyond just facts to focus on purpose, audience, and form.

Focus areas: Students are crafting persuasive articles, formal letters, travel writing, and reviews.

Key skills: Developing a sophisticated tone, using rhetorical devices, and organising ideas for impact.

How to help: Ask your child to read a local newspaper article or review and discuss the writer’s viewpoint.

    Year 10: Exploring fiction

Year 10 students are accelerating their reading of fiction, preparing for the challenges of GCSE Language.

Reading focus: We are studying complex narrative structures, thematic development, and character motivation in modern and classic texts.

How to help: Encourage your child to read for pleasure for 20 minutes daily and discuss how the author creates tension.

    Year 11: GCSE Language revision

With exams approaching, the focus is on timings and exam-style practice.

Paper 1 (Fiction): Focus on language analysis and creative writing.

Paper 2 (Non-Fiction): Focus on comparison of ideas and viewpoint.

Revision tips: Use Seneca Learning for quick quizzes, practice timed questions, and read high-quality journalism, recommend BBC News.

Key advice: Re-write past paper questions to improve structure, and ensure you use precise subject terminology.

    A-level: Language and Literature revision

Our A-level students are honing their analytical skills, focusing on critical viewpoints and context.

Revision focus: Organising context notes and refining essay structure.

Active recall: Encourage students to write down all they know about a theme without looking at notes, then fill in gaps with a different coloured pen.

Resources: Use Seneca Learning for content review.

    Functional Skills: Course completion

We are proud to see many of our functional skills students successfully completing their courses this term!
